More about the Gilbert Baker Pride Flag:

The original flag was designed by activist, veteran, drag queen, and artist, Gilbert Baker, and was inspired by the Rolling Stones song She’s a Rainbow, and the 1960s hippies movement. Each color's specific meaning is listed below:

  • Pink: Sex (later removed)

  • Red: Life

  • Orange: Healing

  • Yellow: Sunlight

  • Green: Nature

  • Turquoise: Magic (later removed)

  • Indigo: Serenity

  • Violet: Spirit

The evolution to the six-colored flag used today happened out of practicality.

After the parade in 1978, demand for the Pride Flag increased, but the hot pink fabric was increasing difficult to source in large quantities. Then, to make the flag colors an  even 6, the turqouise stripe was subsequently removed.

Artist note: Learning the history of the Gilbert Baker Pride Flag, I felt spiritually called to reincorporate the two bands that were removed being a sex-positive magical practioner myself. Turns out that achieveing a hot pink in ceramics also has its challenges, but nonetheless sex & magic are integral to my state of being and happy to see them celebrated in Pride as originally intented.
