My Story

My Journey to becoming a potter was much like a homecoming for me. I first signed up for classes my senior year of high school and quickly excelled with hand building particular with coiled vessels. For the second half of the year, I wanted to take ceramics II which focused on the wheel, but due to schedule conflicts, I was not able to proceed with the class. Fast forward to about 10 years later, coming out of the 2020 pandemic, I felt the clay calling me back and started researching local classes and signed up at the Art League in Alexandria, Va. From there, it had reignited the longing for me to connect and create with clay once again.

There and Now:

The Journey:

Once I signed up for my first class I have never looked back. I spent the first semester tackling the wheel and did not make anything for the first several weeks focusing on the foundations. Towards the end I walked away with a few pieces and fell in love with the process. Once I became comfortable with the wheel, I then began focusing on creating my first dinnerware set and went into full production mode. Now my style gravitates toward balance of utilizing both throwing and hand building techniques to join and sculpt custom one of a kind pieces

As the semester turned into years, â€‹I became inspired to make things for my altar such as ceremonial cups, idol figures, and incense burners. I first was inspired to make vulva incense burners and goddess figures to honor divine feminine energy then got the brilliant idea envisioning a penis incense burner with smoke billowing out of the top of the shaft.  It is truly a rewarding experience to bring a vision into reality following wherever my creativity journey takes me.

Now, I enjoy long hours in the studio where working with clay is very much a mediative experience allowing my creativity coming to life. I am inspired by nature and find much joy showcasing various animal, plant, fungi, species in my pieces. Furthermore, I have been assisting as a teaching assistant for the past several semesters helping to foster creativity in others and build community.

My future pursuits include getting the home studio up and running and diving into glaze chemistry. I love mixing and layering glazes and seeing how the chemicals react and call them my happy little accidents. I have additional interests in building an at home raku firing system with the potential to be taken on the road and presented at various festivals and events.
