Limited Edition Wood-Fired Pottery (at Cone 10)
Wood-fired pottery, especially when fired to the fiery heights of Cone 10, stands apart not only for its durability and beauty but also for the profound ritual embedded in its creation. These unique vessels and sculptures, offered in limited editions, bear the signature of an ancient craft where fire, earth, and spirit converge.

The Wood Firing Process (at Cone 10)
Reaching Cone 10 means the kiln’s interior temperature soars to approximately 2,370°F (1,300°C), transforming clay into a vitrified, nearly glass-like form. Unlike electric kilns, wood firing demands a careful, intuitive dance between potter and flame. Over several days, logs are methodically fed into the kiln, their embers radiating uneven heat and releasing ash. This ash, carried by the furnace’s draft, settles onto the pots, fusing into a natural glaze that can create unpredictable and exquisite textures and colors. The process requires patience and attentiveness, as the potter must understand how flames lick and swirl, how the kiln’s atmosphere shifts, and how these elements shape each piece uniquely. Additional chemicals can be added such as the soda used during this firing.
What makes these creations limited editions is the inherent variability; no two firings are identical. Each pot carries the imprint of a specific kiln’s condition, the weather on firing days, the wood type, and the potter’s timing, rendering every work a singular expression of craft and the elements.

Spiritual and Magical Dimensions
Wood firing transcends time, weaving deeply into the tapestry of earth magic. In many ancient and modern paths, fire embodies transformation, purification, and renewal—an elemental force that acts as both destroyer and creator. Earth, by contrast, grounds and nurtures, connecting the maker to the physical realm. When combined in wood firing, these powers manifest visibly: raw earth is transmuted by sacred flame.
At KJones Pottery we view firing as a ritual, an invocation of natural cycles and elemental energies. The kiln becomes an altar, the flames dancers and deities, and the finished piece holds the memory of earth and fire’s coalescence. This reverence infuses each piece beyond mere function or aesthetics, inviting owners to connect with the primal rhythms of nature and the silent magic woven into the ceramic form.
